What are the divine beasts on the roofs of ancient buildings?

The ancient buildings in China are composed of one main ridge and four vertical ridges, on which six types of artificial beasts are placed, collectively known as the "Five Ridges and Six Beasts". In ancient times, our ancestors regarded them as divine beasts and worshipped them with reverence. The six beasts of Qi Wang could protect their spines and ward off disasters. In ancient times, the roof beasts were referred to as "little runners" or "cornered beasts" because they had already reached the forefront of the eaves and would fall down if they took another step forward.

Chinese ancient architecture is mainly made of wood, and lightning strikes and fires often cause the destruction of buildings and towers. In the "Miscellaneous Records of the Green Box", it is said that "the Han Bai Liang Tai disaster was caused by the Yue Wu Shang's aversion to victory. The construction of the Zhang Palace was carried out, and a statue of a carp was set up on the roof of the house to prevent fires, which is also known as the kiss of a carp in this world. Poison kiss is like kissing a beast, which ancient people placed on the roof of a house to avoid fire. This matter is also recorded in documents such as "Tang Huiyao" and "Zaozao Fashi" of the Song Dynasty.

The ridges of ancient buildings were mostly made of wood covered tiles, and the slope of the ridges allowed the tiles at the front of the eaves to bear the pushing force from behind, while also being easily blown off by strong winds, so tile nails were needed to fix them. In order to protect the tile nails from rain and snow erosion, the horned beast is used as a hat for the iron nails, and the same goes for the hanging beast, the guard beast, and the nesting beast. These beasts gradually increased in number since the Tang and Song dynasties, and by the Qing dynasty, they had formed a queue.

Each divine beast on the roof has its own meaning, and the dragon symbolizes the emperor; The phoenix metaphorically refers to a person with holy virtue; Lions represent bravery and majesty; Tianma and Haima are auspicious incarnations in mythology; According to ancient books, the Lion is a fierce beast of the same kind as the Lion, and some believe it is one of the Nine Sons of the Dragon; The fish is a strange creature in the sea, used for firefighting and disaster prevention; Xiezhi is also a legendary beast similar to the lion; Bullfighting is a legendary dragon; What is a portrait of a winged monkey with a face.
